CHAPTER 11 Pinky
This was ridiculous. They couldn’t just come in and do something like this. There were rules, laws about this kind of thing! Her parents were lawyers; Pinky should know. She yanked the restaurant door open and strode in past the surprised woman at the reservation desk, Samir close but silent on her heels. He was probably wondering exactly what he’d gotten himself into this summer. Well, it was too late for that.
The room where the trivia night was being hosted was filled with jovially raised (tipsy) voices, the clink of glasses, and heavy cologne and perfume. People with graying hair, all of whom were buttoned up into their suits and shiny dresses, looked up at Pinky as she came flying in. They didn’t say anything to her, but they raised their eyebrows just a touch to show their disdain in a socially acceptable way at her hair and her eyebrow ring and her scowling expression. A couple of people even leaned in to whisper to each other, their eyes following Pinky, but she ignored them. She was used to that reaction in her parents’ social circles.
Pinky stalked up to the table her parents were sitting at. Be calm, she told herself. If you’re calm and adult about this, people are much more likely to listen to you. Don’t let that temper get the best of you again.
When her parents and Dolly’s family registered her presence, Pinky spoke. “They’re closing the butterfly habitat? Have they lost every single one of their brain cells?”
Her dad made a face that implied she was not just playing with fire but trying to marry it. Her mom hissed, quietly but ominously, “Priyanka. Sit. Down.”
Pinky sat. Samir took a seat next to her. “Tell me they’re joking,” Pinky said, drumming her fingers on the table hard and fast. How were they all so calm? “Did you say anything?” She looked around at her family. “Has anyone said anything?”
“I know it’s really sad,” Dolly said, playing with her gold seashell-charm bracelet. “But what can we do? It’s been here forever and the town’s changing.”
“Exactly,” Pinky said, leaning forward. “The habitat’s been here forever. It gets precedence. We have to do something!”
“I’m glad you’re so passionate,” her mother said, and Pinky could tell it had taken everything within her to part with this compliment. “But maybe you could reserve your passion for something that actually has a future. This is a done deal, Pinky.”
“Though your passion is inspiring,” Abe said, smiling gently. A pity smile. A pity compliment.
Pinky pushed her chair back. “I don’t give a flying fig about being inspiring. If none of you has the ovaries to do anything about this, fine. I’ll do it myself.”
“Where do you think you’re going?” her mother asked. “Sit down. We’re about to begin the final round and then we’ll head home together.”
“I’m going back home right now,” Pinky said. “I’ll walk.” She turned to Samir as she scraped her chair back and stood. “You should stay.”
